Hotel Review: Crested Butte Elevation Hotel and Spa

A view of the outside of the Elevation Hotel and Spa at Crested Butte.

The Elevation Hotel and Spa is arguably Crested Butte’s most convenient true ski-in/ski-out hotel.

Located in the heart of Mount Crested Butte village, the Elevation Hotel and Spa stands out as Crested Butte’s most convenient ski-in/ski-out hotel, with minimal walking required to get to the primary out-of-base lifts. Just a stone's throw away from the Red Lady Express lift, this hotel offers the unique advantage of skiing/riding (during the winter) or biking (during the summer) right in from the lift.

While other ski-in/ski-out accommodations in Colorado might boast more luxury, Elevation sets itself apart with its vibrant atmosphere, competitive pricing, and an overall fun experience.

The Elevation Hotel’s rooms are quite comfortable, if a bit dated in some respects.

Accommodations

Elevation's rooms range from single-bed accommodations to one-bedroom suites complete with a kitchenette and living area. Some elements, like the kitchenette's metal coil stove top, light fixtures throughout, and lack of smart TV do date the rooms slightly. The presence of USB plugs by the bed is sufficient for most, though the absence of USB-C ports is noticeable. The TVs are big and new, but do not have any smart TV functionality. The beds and pillows were high quality and very comfortable. There were plenty of towels, extra blankets, bath robes, and even slippers in the closet.

The Elevation’s nicer rooms come with a living room, large-but-furnitureless balcony, and kitchenette.

Balconies in the rooms offer a chance to connect with the outdoors, but the lack of furniture will deter most from spending time there. Additionally, the balcony we had was dirty and the plastic on the screen door was broken, meaning it would not fully close.  It's also worth noting that rooms lack air conditioning, which might be a concern during the hotter months.

The bathrooms were nice and seemed recently updated. They were stocked with everything you’d expect from a hotel bathroom.

Amenities

Common Spaces

The common areas at Elevation, while not dripping in luxury, have a distinct character. The Match Stick Productions Lounge stands out as a highlight, reminiscent of a classic cigar bar from old movies. With its large TVs, plush leather seating, pool table, and inviting ambiance, it's the perfect spot to unwind after a day on the mountain. The lobby area also includes a bar that has a cozy fireplace, commendable cocktail offerings and great seating. This bar area also serves coffee and pastries in the morning.

The Elevation’s Match Stick Lounge is a must-hit spot after a day on the slopes.

The check-in area leaves a first impression that undersells the rest of the hotel. The aesthetics of it are very plain, and less impressive than many hotels of less stature than Elevation. The space is small and feels crowded and full with only a couple guests in line.

The level below the lobby offers a large common area with couches and workstations placed throughout. This space also has a hair salon, conference room, and a small arcade that kids will love. This level is also where the pool and spa are located.

The Elevation’s lower level is home to a large, airy common area with ample seating and a ping pong table.

Pool and Spa

The indoor pool area at Elevation is adorned with aesthetic tiles and comfortable chairs. The inclusion of a hot tub and sauna amplifies the experience.

Just down the hall from the indoor pool features an outdoor deck with two hot tubs that offer mesmerizing mountain views. However, their popularity means they can get crowded quickly. The spa area was clean and inviting, and the gym was very impressive for a hotel.

Crested Butte’s outdoor hot tubs offer stunning views of the mountain—and often get packed as a result.

Dining

Jose, the on-site restaurant, offers a delightful dining experience, with both indoor and outdoor seating. The food and drinks are just slightly above average, but the outdoor patio, complete with live music and a firepit, elevates the overall ambiance. This is a great place for après even if you are not staying at Elevation.

During the summer, the Elevation Hotel stands out for bikers thanks to a complimentary valet bike check and bike repair station.

Ski and Bike Valet

Ski Valet (Winter)

The Elevation Hotel has a ski valet on the second floor of the hotel, right where you get off the slopes and walk in. You drop off your skis, get a ticket just like a coat check, and your equipment is secured safely overnight. You can store your boots with the valet as well if you’d like, and if you didn’t bring your own gear, you can also rent directly from this establishment.

Bike Valet (Summer)

Mountain bike theft is a huge issue in the sport. If you want to annoy a mountain biker, tell him/her they have to keep their bike outside. Some hotels will not allow your bikes inside, some will allow you to wheel them to your room, some will say to keep it in the lobby, but the best have a dedicated bike check room that gets locked.

Elevation has a complimentary bike check at the valet area (this is a different location than the ski valet). You get a ticket just like with the ski valet, and your bike is locked up inside and safe for the night. The peace of mind knowing it's safe goes a long way for mountain bike enthusiasts. In addition, Elevation has a bike repair station that has a stand, compressed air, and every tool you can think of. It is clear Elevation takes mountain biking seriously and welcomes the sport which is a great feeling.

Final Thoughts

Elevation Hotel and Spa might not be the epitome of luxury, but it offers an experience that's hard to match, especially for avid skiers, snowboarders, and mountain bikers. With rates around $300 a night during peak season, it offers great value. The convenience of biking or skiing/riding in, coupled with the plethora of amenities like the bike check and repair station, lounge, arcade, and hot tubs, ensure a memorable stay. For mountain bikers or snow sports enthusiasts looking for a blend of fun, adventure, and comfort, Elevation is the place to be.
